Classical woodworking techniques are the essence of each instructional program offered. The three fundamental categories of joinery, carving, and turning are covered. Be it a contemporary or traditional pursuit, the basic groundwork is laid for a sound and skillful background. An in-depth study of furniture history, finishing, and design aesthetics are included.
Ten Month Master Course
This ten month course accommodates participants who can work in their own shop environment and are able to make frequent visits to my shop. This course includes complete guidance.
Besides completing the piece of furniture, each individual can attain a higher level of competence as artist/craftsmen. I will work with participants on an individual basis to ensure that everyone ends up with all requirements to complete their piece and has a thorough understanding of the techniques involved. Complete guidance, correct plans, templates, etc. are included.
First, the subject matter is chosen. Typical items are chairs, clocks, highboys, tea tables and chests. The cost for this course is related to the project chosen. Materials must be purchased by the individual ahead of time as well as required hand tools.

Full-Time Apprenticeship Program
This two year apprenticeship is a full-time program that takes the participant to the next level of master furniture making. The purpose of my instruction is to empower each individual with the skills required for a career in the various trades of woodworking.
The premier woodworking instruction available today, with time honored skills, creative values, and rigorous hands on training in joinery, carving and turning. The 2 to 3 year furniture making program is offered for students who are passionate about the materials, the process, the acquired skills, and the empowering abilities that enable them to create the highest quality wooden objects.
Both power and proper bench skills, are taught. Drafting/Design practices are also covered. A series of visits to museums and private collections are made throughout the year. And though hand skills are emphasized, the course includes machine and other preparatory procedures, along with basic business practices, marketing strategies, and related subjects that pertain to a career in interior design and fine woodworking.
Each person will select a piece of furniture that is well suited for their first project, and begins by making complete drawings and templates. Small class size enables one-on-one time with each. Separate studio spaces are supplied and open hours available for practice time. Daily instruction is given between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm.
The program runs from the standard September through May academic year. Each individual is assigned a personal (private) studio space, complete with drafting equipment, along with access to a vast library of furniture related books. The school has a fully equipped modern machine room. At the beginning of the program, each receives his or her own new ul.timate Ulmia bench that, upon completion of the two year program, becomes their personal property. (We want to develop familiarity and muscle memory with the tools we are going to use, none more important than the bench.
Enrollment
Upon acceptance, an enrollment agreement will be sent including costs, when class begins, terms etc. This form must be signed and returned within 14 days. The tuition for this class is $21,000 per year. The first payment of $10,500 is the first of July and the second payment mid December. Cancellation policy is included in the enrollment form.
Admissions
September start date and running through standard academic year. Class size is limited to four elite students Prior experience is very important in the selection process for admission.
Curriculum
- Develop skill in the use of hand tools
- Proper machinery use
- Carving — bas relief, intaglio, in the round, and sculpting
- Turning — spindle and face plate
- Furniture construction (including finish restoration)
- Design and drafting skills (including Auto CAD)
